Celebrity Cruises Pros and Cons: Is This Premium Cruise Line Right for You?

Celebrity Cruises has carved out a distinctive position in the cruise industry as a “premium” brand with a reputation for sophisticated elegance, innovative ship design, and elevated dining experiences. With a fleet of 15 ships sailing to destinations across the globe, Celebrity appeals to travelers seeking refinement without the premium price tag of luxury lines. In this comprehensive Celebrity Cruises review, we break down all the pros and cons to help you determine if this cruise line matches your vacation expectations.

“Nothing Comes Close” reflects the cruise line’s commitment to providing an upscale experience that feels more resort-like than other mainstream cruise lines. Celebrity pushed design boundaries with its Edge-class vessels and recently announced its entry into river cruising, expanding options for destination-focused travelers.

However, Celebrity Cruises isn’t for everyone. While the line excels at creating sophisticated, adult-oriented experiences, it may disappoint families or thrill-seekers wanting waterslides and go-kart tracks or high-energy entertainment.

We’ve sailed on multiple Celebrity ships across different classes and itineraries, from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean to Alaska, experiencing everything from the revolutionary Edge-class vessels to the refreshed Solstice-class and Millennium-class ships. Now, we’re sharing everything from what makes this premium cruise line exceptional to where it falls short against the competition.

The Pros of Celebrity Cruises

1. Modern Luxury at Non-Luxury Pricing

Celebrity Cruises delivers a refined, upscale atmosphere that rivals many luxury cruise lines while maintaining pricing that’s accessible to a broader audience. The cruise line’s ships feature contemporary design and attention to detail. From the moment you step aboard a Celebrity ship, you’ll notice the difference—there’s no overwhelming neon colors or flashy décor, but rather sophisticated spaces with clean lines and thoughtful touches.

This modern luxury extends beyond aesthetics. From service to dining quality, the overall Celebrity experience excels beyond many other mainstream cruise lines. Yet, cruise fares remain significantly lower than more upscale brands like Viking, Seabourn, or Silversea. The demographic skews younger than these brands as well—you’ll find many more in their mid-30s to mid-50’s sailing on Celebrity Cruises.

2. Outstanding Culinary Program

Celebrity Cruises provides top-notch dining experiences that rival land-based restaurants. The main dining room consistently delivers quality beyond typical cruise ship fare, unlike some cruise lines where main dining room quality is hit-or-miss.

The specialty restaurants elevate the experience even further. Fine Cut Steakhouse ranks among the best steakhouses at sea, serving perfectly prepared cuts in an elegant atmosphere. Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud, found on the newest ships in the fleet, brings Michelin-level French cuisine to the high seas. Le Petit Chef combines innovative projection technology with multi-course dining for a truly unique experience, and Tuscan Grille delivers upscale Italian cuisine.

Even Celebrity’s Oceanview Café buffet exceeds expectations, with variety and quality across the fleet.

3. Adult-Focused Sophisticated Atmosphere

Celebrity Cruises strikes the perfect balance for travelers seeking sophistication without stuffiness. The atmosphere is more upscale and refined than mainstream lines like Carnival, NCL, or Royal Caribbean, yet more lively than traditional premium brands like Princess or Holland America. You’ll find adults enjoying cocktails and entertainment in elegant lounges rather than rowdy pool deck parties, but the energy also remains social and upbeat past 10 PM.

This adult-focused approach means fewer children running through public spaces and quieter pool areas. There’s typically a mix of couples, friend groups, and solo travelers who appreciate quality over quantity when it comes to onboard experiences. There’s still trivia, game shows, and nightly main theater productions, but there’s also other activities like enrichment lectures, mixology classes, and cooking classes for discerning travelers.

4. Exclusive Mainstream Presence in Galapagos

Celebrity Cruises stands alone among mainstream cruise lines with its presence in the Galapagos Islands. Celebrity Flora offers an intimate expedition experience with naturalist guides, zodiac excursions, and access to protected wildlife viewing areas that larger ships simply cannot reach.

This all-suite, 100-guest vessel is designed specifically for sailing these islands, but offers all the modern comforts not typically found on other expedition ships in the region. Travelers can expect exceptional dining, comfortable accommodations, and attentive service while onboard—along with authentic expedition experiences ashore.

Naturalists accompany every excursion, providing insights into the unique ecosystem that inspired Darwin’s theory of evolution. For travelers seeking this once-in-a-lifetime destination without sacrificing comfort, Celebrity offers an unmatched option in the mainstream cruise market.

5. Loyalty Reciprocity with Sister Brands

Royal Caribbean Group’s loyalty program extends across sister brands Royal Caribbean and Silversea. This means your Celebrity Cruises loyalty status carries over when you cruise with sister brands, giving you comparable perks. For instance, if you are Elite in Celebrity’s Captain’s Club, you will sail as Diamond in Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor Society or with 250 Venetian Society days on Silversea, where you’ll receive the perks for that respective cruise line’s loyalty program.

This reciprocity provides valuable flexibility for travelers who enjoy the brands’ distinct offerings. You might cruise Celebrity for sophisticated European itineraries and Royal Caribbean for family vacations.

While loyalty points are not cumulative across the brands, this status honoring still provides significant value through tiered benefits. It’s particularly appealing for Celebrity loyalists who want to occasionally experience Royal Caribbean’s innovative ships and attractions or high-end luxury on Silversea while still receiving recognition for their loyalty investment.

6. Elevated Accommodations Across the Fleet

Celebrity Cruises features elevated accommodations across its entire fleet, with thoughtful design and quality furnishings. Even on older ships like Celebrity Summit, recent revitalizations have modernized accommodations with new bedding, updated bathrooms, and contemporary décor that is far superior to ships of a similar age from competitors like Princess or Holland America.

Edge-class ships take accommodations to another level with optimized interior space and upgraded bathrooms. The staterooms also feature more upscale finishes than typical accommodations, making your stay feel more like a hotel on land than a cramp cruise ship cabin.

7. Exceptional Spa and Wellness Focus

Celebrity Cruises has elevated spa and wellness offerings across its fleet with state-of-the-art gyms and fitness classes, thermal suites with various saunas and steam rooms, treatment rooms with everything from traditional massages to cutting-edge therapies, and other wellness offerings like a juice bar, yoga, meditation, and even pickleball.

Celebrity also offers AquaClass staterooms—spa-focused accommodations that include unlimited thermal suite access, complimentary fitness classes, in-room yoga mats, and discounts on spa treatments, among other perks. AquaClass guests can enjoy exclusive dining at Blu restaurant as well, which serves lighter, healthier cuisine for breakfast and dinner.

8. The Retreat Ship-Within-a-Ship Experience

Celebrity’s suite complex, The Retreat, provides an admirable ship-within-a-ship experience, offering an exclusive enclave that competes with NCL’s Haven or the MSC Yacht Club. Suite guests gain access to a private sundeck with pool, hot tubs, and dedicated bar service, plus an exclusive restaurant called Luminae that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with menus designed specifically for suite guests.

The Retreat also includes a private lounge serving complimentary specialty coffees, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails and canapés. The experience is further enhanced by dedicated concierge service and butler service for higher suite categories, creating a truly personalized vacation.

Plus, The Retreat suite guests still have full access to all ship amenities, dining venues, and entertainment. This means you can enjoy the exclusivity and personalized service of a luxury cruise while still taking advantage of the variety and options that only larger ships provide.

9. Expanding into River Cruising

Celebrity Cruises recently announced its entry into the river cruise market, leveraging its premium brand positioning to offer elevated river cruise experiences. This expansion allows Celebrity to deliver destination-immersive itineraries on European rivers while maintaining the sophisticated atmosphere and elevated service guests expect from the brand.

River cruising perfectly complements Celebrity’s destination-focused approach, offering more intimate experiences in historic cities with overnight stays and extended port times. The combination of ocean and river cruise options under one brand gives guests flexibility to explore the world while maintaining loyalty benefits and familiar service standards.

10. Non-Smoking Casinos

Celebrity Cruises distinguishes itself from most cruise lines by offering completely non-smoking casinos fleetwide. This policy creates a more comfortable environment for all guests by eliminating the pervasive smoke smell that often fills casino spaces on other ships.

The non-smoking policy makes the space more welcoming to non-smokers who want to try their luck without dealing with secondhand smoke and anyone simply walking through casino areas to reach other venues. While smoking is still permitted in designated outdoor areas, keeping casinos smoke-free is another example of how Celebrity focuses on creating a more refined, health-conscious cruise experience.

11. Drink Packages Still Unlimited

While many cruise lines have started to impose daily limits on alcoholic beverages included in drink packages, Celebrity Cruises maintains truly unlimited beverage packages.

The Classic Beverage Package covers all beers, spirits, cocktails, frozen drinks, and wines by the glass up to $12 per serving. With this package, you are also entitled to non-premium bottled water, specialty coffee, juices, and soda. The Premium Beverage Package includes specialty coffees & teas, craft & artisan beers, spirits, cocktails, frozen drinks, soda, premium bottled water, and wines by the glass worth up to $19.

This unlimited nature provides excellent value for guests who like to enjoy cocktails and wine throughout their vacation without worrying about counting drinks or hitting limits. It also allows guests to try new beverages without concern about wasting money on drinks they might not like.

The Cons of Celebrity Cruises

1. Limited Activities for Kids and Multi-Generational Families

Celebrity Cruises offers youth programming through its Camp at Sea, but the facilities and activities pale in comparison to family-focused cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, or Disney. The kids’ clubs are typically smaller with more limited age-appropriate activities, and teen facilities often consist of a single lounge with basic entertainment options.

Families traveling with children will find fewer family-friendly amenities overall—no waterslides, limited pool space for kids, and minimal programming designed to engage younger guests. The refined, adult-oriented atmosphere that appeals to many Celebrity cruisers may leave children bored, particularly on sea days.

Multi-generational groups may find this challenging when trying to accommodate both grandparents seeking relaxation and grandchildren wanting activities and excitement. While Celebrity can certainly work for families who prioritize destination exploration over onboard amenities, those expecting extensive kids’ programming and family entertainment should consider other cruise lines.

2. Higher Price Point Than Mainstream Lines

Celebrity Cruises typically costs 30-50% more than comparable itineraries on mainstream lines. While the refined atmosphere, elevated service, and superior dining justify premium pricing for many travelers, the cost difference puts Celebrity out of reach for budget-conscious cruisers.

The base fare is just the beginning—specialty dining, beverage packages, WiFi, gratuities, shore excursions, and other extras add up quickly. Even with Celebrity’s bundled packages attempting to provide value, the total vacation cost may exceed what many can justify, particularly when comparable destinations are available on less expensive cruise lines.

This pricing positions Celebrity in an awkward middle ground for some travelers—too expensive when compared to mainstream cruise lines, yet not quite the all-inclusive experience of luxury cruise lines.

Celebrity Beyond Caribbean Cruise Review

3. Lack of Thrilling Attractions & High-Energy Entertainment

Celebrity Cruises focuses on sophistication and relaxation rather than thrilling attractions and high-energy entertainment. You won’t find waterslides, rope courses, surf simulators, go-kart tracks, or any of the headline-grabbing features that define modern megaships. You won’t find Broadway-caliber theater productions or a packed nightclub at 2 AM either. Still, we find the entertainment on Celebrity Cruises is generally better than Princess or Holland America.

This approach may disappoint travelers who expect innovative attractions and constant stimulation during their cruise. Families with teens, young couples seeking adventure, or anyone who enjoys the theme park-style atmosphere of megaships will likely find Celebrity’s offerings underwhelming.

4. Limited Casual Dining Options

While Celebrity excels at specialty dining and main dining room experiences, the cruise line offers surprisingly few casual grab-and-go options compared to mainstream competitors. Beyond the Oceanview Café buffet, choices are limited to Mast Grill for burgers and fries, and Café al Bacio which primarily serves coffee and desserts rather than sanwiches or other small items. Don’t get us wrong, Café al Bacio is delicious and all the desserts are included in the cruise fare, we just wish it served more.

This limited selection can be frustrating for guests who want quick, casual meals between activities or before shore excursions. There’s no pizza window, no Mexican cantina, no pub fare—none of the diverse casual venues that Carnival, Royal Caribbean, or Norwegian offer. If you’re not in the mood to deal with crowds at the buffet or a prolonged sit-down meal in the main dining room, your options are quite limited.

5. All Included Package Less Comprehensive

While Celebrity offers a bundled package attempting to create a more all-inclusive experience, the “All Included” package covers less than similar packages from competitor brands like Princess Cruises or Holland America Line. With this package, guests get a Classic Drinks Package and the Basic WiFi Package but it no longer includes gratuities.

The All Included package is also not a set per-day price like the competition. This dynamic pricing means it’s more difficult to predict how much it will actually cost you to add the All Included package to your cruise vacation—but you can expect somewhere around $90 per person, per day. This is more expensive than Princess or Holland America, yet you get less inclusions.

The Princess Plus or Premier packages and Holland America’s Have It All package provide more inclusivity with additional items such as specialty dining, premium beverage options, gratuities, and shore excursion credit. This means Celebrity cruises can end up costing significantly more than anticipated once you add specialty dining, upgrade to premium beverage packages, gratuites, or purchase shore excursions.

6. Less Tech and Smart Features

Celebrity Cruises lags behind competitors in embracing modern cruise ship technology and smart features. Unlike Princess Cruises’ wearable medallions or Royal Caribbean’s WOW bands, Celebrity hasn’t fully integrated technology to streamline the guest experience. Further, there are no smart elevators that expedite you getting to your destination or app-based features for ordering drinks or keeping tabs on family members.

This technology gap means more time waiting for elevators and the nuisance of carrying keycards. While some travelers appreciate the more traditional approach, tech-savvy cruisers accustomed to seamless digital experiences on other cruise lines may find Celebrity’s offerings a bit inconvenient.

That’s not to say that Celebrity doesn’t have any tech features. We do appreciate the digital check-in process and the e-muster drill that the cruise line has rolled out in recent years.

7. Infinite Verandas May Not Suit Everyone

While Celebrity’s innovative infinite veranda design on Edge-class ships appeals to many guests, this concept isn’t universally beloved. The design replaces traditional balconies with floor-to-ceiling windows that open to create an indoor-outdoor space, but this means no actual outdoor furniture or true outdoor area separate from your cabin interior.

For guests who love traditional balconies where they can enjoy morning coffee or evening cocktails without turning the air conditioning off in their cabin or disturbing other cabin mates, infinite verandas feel like a downgrade. The design essentially extends your room with more interior living space rather than providing a dedicated outdoor space, which can be disappointing for balcony enthusiasts.

On the other hand, infinite verandas do provide partial weather protection, more privacy, and additional interior seating options. Still, we prefer a traditional balcony.

8. Varied Quality Across Ship Classes

Like all cruise lines with diverse fleets, the Celebrity experience varies significantly depending on which ship you choose. While the Edge-class ships showcase Celebrity’s vision for modern premium cruising, older Millennium-class ships lack many of these innovations despite refurbishments. Solstice-class ships, though newer, don’t feel as comtemporary either.

Entertainment offerings also vary considerably—newer ships feature cutting-edge technology and unique venues that older ships simply can’t match. Dining variety differs too, with Edge-class ships offering more specialty restaurant options than older vessels. Even cabin design, bathroom layouts, and storage solutions vary dramatically across ship classes.

This inconsistency means first-time Celebrity guests need to research specific ships carefully rather than assuming all Celebrity ships deliver the same experience.

9. No Dedicated Private Island Destination

Unlike Norwegian’s Great Stirrup Cay, Holland America’s Half Moon Cay, or MSC’s Ocean Cay, Celebrity doesn’t operate its own private island destination. The cruise line occasionally includes stops at Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay on select sailings, but Celebrity’s access is limited and inconsistent compared to lines with dedicated private destinations.

For travelers who prioritize relaxing beach days as part of their cruise experience, the absence of an exclusive, pristine private island experience is a disadvantage compared to competitors who offer guaranteed perfect beach days with controlled crowds and complimentary amenities.

Celebrity Cruises Review: Is This Premium Line Right For You?

Celebrity Cruises delivers a sophisticated, destination-focused cruise experience that emphasizes modern elegance, culinary excellence, and attentive service over high-energy entertainment and family-friendly attractions. The cruise line successfully bridges mainstream and luxury cruising, offering refined experiences at more affordable pricing.

However, Celebrity’s adult-oriented atmosphere and focus on sophistication over thrills makes it less suitable for families with young children or travelers seeking the latest cruise ship innovations and non-stop entertainment.

Whether Celebrity Cruises aligns with your vacation vision depends entirely on your priorities and travel style.
