Given the number of options available, deciding which cabin to select for a cruise can be difficult. For our recent Canada and New England cruise with Holland America, we were sailing as guests of the cruise line so we were assigned a Holland America Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam, cabin 6015.

Reviewing the deck plans, this starboard balcony cabin is considered a VD category verandah stateroom. This balcony stateroom is located forward on deck 6, the Mozart deck. According to Holland America Line’s website, verandah cabins on this ship range in size from 228 to 405 square feet including the balcony.

For cruisers comparing the different stateroom options available on HAL, we have put together this Holland America Verandah Cabin Review on Nieuw Statendam.

We have sailed on Holland America Line a few times now, including the cruise line’s new Rotterdam. So, we were eager to see how this Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam compared.

Our cabin was located quite forward on the ship; though, it was still not too far away from the forward bank of elevators. Being on Deck 6, we were never far away from any of the action either.

It was equidistant from the indoor public areas below and the outdoor public areas above. The Grand Dutch Cafe was only 3 decks below and the Lido deck was only 3 decks above. Further, we never had much of an issue securing an elevator.

Layout of a Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam

At first glance, this verandah cabin on Nieuw Statendam looked very similar to Rotterdam in terms of color palette and décor. However, it did feel a bit smaller square footage wise.

Immediately entering our Holland America Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam, the bathroom was to the left. Across from the bathroom was a closet with three separate storage areas.

Beyond the bathroom and closet was the bed. The bed was on the left (forward) wall. There was a small night stand on each side of the bed with some additional storage space. Both sides of the bed had a power outlet and a USB outlet as well.

Across from the bed was the television. Now, it was a rather tight squeeze to walk between the bed and the opposite wall.

Beyond the bed, there was a loveseat to the left and the desk to the right.

Finally, there was the balcony. There was enough room for 2 adjustable chairs, ottomans, and a small round table.

Bathroom

The bathroom in our Holland America Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam was modern and elegant. While still a cruise ship bathroom, it was slightly larger than typical.

The vanity area had enough storage with three small shelves off to one side and on-wall soap and lotion dispensers on the other. Holland America gets two thumbs up for the liquid soap dispensers as this is something we always miss on cruise ships.

The shower too was roomier. With a glass shower door, full-sized dispensers of shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel, and a shave bar, this shower is certainly an upgrade from most cruise cabin showers.

Closet

The closet configuration in our Holland America Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam provided plenty of storage for the two of us on a 7-day cruise. With the combination of hangers and shelves, we had more than enough room to stow away all of our clothing.

The closet included 2 clothes bars with shelving below each. Adjacent to the closet, there was more cabinetry that housed the safe, mini-fridge, and some additional storage drawers. Immediately next to this cabinetry was a corner unit which housed some glasses and the ice bucket.

Further, Holland America includes bathrobes and beach towels for all guests. There are also two coat hooks on the wall next to the bed to hang additional items.

Main Cabin Area

All verandah cabins on Holland America generally include a sitting area, a queen-sized signature Mariner’s Dream™ bed with a Euro-Top mattress, and a desk.

The bed offered plenty of comfort during our trip. We had no issues falling asleep at night. The upgraded bedding and linens meant we were able to unwind each evening in comfort.

The sitting area, which contained a love seat and coffee table, was adequate in size. The loveseat provided enough space for two adults. The table was a tad bit small, more like the size of an ottoman, but it sufficed for the week.

Above the loveseat, there were additional storage compartments. While these would have been great to store belongings, these compartments housed the life jackets.

Across from the seating area was the desk. While somewhat smaller in size, it did contain three drawers for storage and plenty of additional outlets. One of the drawers housed the hair dryer and a makeup mirror. There were three U.S. outlets, two European outlets, and 1 USB outlet located here.

While the desk did not offer a lot of counter space, we were able to make do with our trusty over-the-door shoe organizer to store some of our toiletries.

Balcony

The Holland America Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam features a generously sized balcony with two lounge chairs, ottomans, and a small table. It seems that the balconies on Holland America are slightly deeper than what you get on most mega-ships.

There was certainly enough space for the two of us to enjoy the sail in and out of ports. It was also a great spot to get some work done in the afternoons. Yes, surprisingly enough, the weather on our fall Canada and New England cruise was warm enough for us to make use of this balcony on a few occasions.

Recap of Our Holland America Verandah Cabin Review on Nieuw Statendam

Similar to our experiences on other HAL cruise ships, this Holland America Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam is the perfect mix of size and value. It provides all the necessary amenities, adequate space, and access to a balcony without breaking the budget.

The bed was comfortable, and there was also plenty of storage. Further, we appreciated the number of power outlets.

Our cabin had easy access to the stairs and elevators, with the public areas only a few decks below or above us. Even though our stateroom was located pretty far forward, there was not any excessive movement or noise when compared to a more midship cabin.

The cabin had a more modern feel with a neutral color palette and beachy wood tones. The bathroom too felt more elegant with white and silver finishes.

Overall, we would highly recommend a Verandah Cabin on Nieuw Statendam. Of course, if you want to splurge, there are even more luxurious accommodations, like the Vista, Signature, Neptune, and Pinnacle suites.

  1. Hola de Mexico,
Enjoyed your reviews of rooms, drinks package and menu and fotos. We have 55 days to our Med cruise. I’m a journalist living last 15 years in the mountains of central Mexico. Your reviews and site nicely organized and informative for us. We have a veranda room and this cruise is our last big trip. I enjoyed reading the menus, drinks and various restaurants. This is our fourth cruise and second on HAL. Again, thanks
