What is the difference between a Pullman bed and a sofa bed?

While the surname “Pullman” is purely coincidental, a Pullman bed is in fact one that you pull down from either the ceiling or a wall. Sometimes guests will need to use a ladder to reach these top beds, or bunks, if it is above another bed. Colloquially, this sleeping arrangement is often referred to as bunk beds.

Unlike traditional bunk beds in childhood bedrooms at home, a Pullman bed can be folded away or stored when not in use to give your cruise cabin more space. Your room steward will typically do this each day, as it might be difficult to manage on your own.

A sofa bed is a sofa or couch that can be converted into a bed if needed. Both options — convertible sofa beds or Pullman beds — are available on cruise ships.

Are Pullman beds comfortable?

If you can sleep comfortably in a single bed, then a Pullman bed shouldn’t be much different. These pull-down beds employ standard mattresses. So from a comfort standpoint, they typically offer more support than a sofa bed.

Pullman beds are traditionally better for families with children, due to their size. There are usually guard rails along the side to help prevent rolling out of bed, though their size varies by ship.

How do you find rooms with a Pullman bed on a cruise?

Pullman beds, like sofa beds, are available in staterooms that accommodate more than two people. Unless the room is a suite and has multiple bedrooms, these additional berths (or beds) are usually in the form of pull-down or convertible sofa sleeping arrangements. Depending on the stateroom, there may be one or two pullman beds in the cabin.

If you’re using a travel advisor, they should be familiar with the sleeping arrangements in every cabin category. If you’re booking on your own through the cruise line’s website, be sure to look at cabin photos and layouts. What are the other types of beds on a cruise?

You might see the term “convertible bed” when booking a cabin on a cruise ship. This is standard, and simply means that you can request to have two separate twin beds or have the beds pushed together (converted) to create a queen-size bed.

Another additional bed arrangement is the trundle bed, also called a pull-out bed. This is a lower bed, rather than an upper bed, that pulls out from underneath one of the existing beds in the cabin. This might be a good option for small children who are still a bit too active or unpredictable for a top bunk.
