Yesterday, we learned that Norwegian Cruise Line was loosening its health protocols with regard to vaccinations, testing, and mask use. Today, Royal Caribbean also updated its website to reflect changes to the need for facial coverings. Now, Royal Caribbean relaxes its mask mandate for vaccinated individuals.
Royal Caribbean Relaxes Mask Mandate
While Royal Caribbean has not gone as far as to say masks are no longer required onboard its ship like Norwegian Cruise Line, the cruise line will be returning to pre-omicron mask requirements as of February 15, 2022.
This means that guests will no longer need masks in vaccinated only areas. These areas include sections of the main theater, certain bars and restaurants, and the casino.
Masks ARE required to be worn:
- While indoors in public areas of the ship, unless seated and actively eating or drinking.
- While visiting ports of call, where local regulations may require them.
Masks are NOT required to be worn:
- Open-air areas of the ship, unless you are in a crowded setting.
- The pool or any activity where they may become wet.
- Venues designated for vaccinated guests only for cruises departing after February 14, 2022.
- Your stateroom when you are with your traveling party.
- While visiting private destinations, unless you are in a crowded setting.
- By any guest under the age of 2.
At this time, Royal Caribbean has not established health and safety protocols for 2022 sailings departing from Europe. Guests will receive notification of specific requirements via email before setting sail.
The list of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated venues does vary slightly by Royal Caribbean ship. A sample list of vaccinated only venues is available here.
Further, for cruises departing on or after February 15, 2022, masks are no longer necessary in the casino. Thus, smoking is permitted once again.
My Time Dining will continue to be available for vaccinated guests only. Further, some activities, showtimes, or seating areas are for vaccinated guests only.
Unlike Norwegian Cruise Line who now requires vaccination for guests 5 years and older, Royal Caribbean is keeping its vaccination cutoff at guests 12 years and older.

I think it’s to soon to relax the mask mandate. What really bothers me, is the fact that you don’t mandate kids 5 and up to be vaccinated! Why is that? Everyone else needs to be vaccinated. I think it’s very unsafe,
