Norwegian Cruise Line Cancels Cruises and Updates Return to Service Dates Due to Omicron

Given the rise in COVID cases, on land and at sea, due to the omicron variant, Norwegian Cruise Line cancels some cruises and updates its return to service dates for some additional ships within its fleet.

While some cancellations appear due to COVID cases onboard the ship, others are related to newly imposed travel restrictions in destinations the NCL fleet visits across the globe.

Guests onboard Norwegian Pearl’s current sailing received word that their 11-day voyage which just began on January 3rd would be ending early. The ship has turned around and will return to PortMiami. The ship will disembark guests on January 6th. This cancellation is due to a number of COVID cases among crew.

Norwegian Getaway guests also received a similar notification cancelling the January 5th sailing at the last minute due to “COVID related circumstances”.

Today, Norwegian Cruise Line issued an update on its website with further cancellations and updates on return to service dates. These updates impact 7 ships as listed below.

  • Norwegian Pearl cruises with embarkation dates through and including January 14, 2022
  • Norwegian Sky cruises with embarkation dates through and including February 25, 2022
  • Pride of America cruises with embarkation dates through and including February 26, 2022
  • Norwegian Jade cruises with embarkation dates through and including March 3, 2022
  • Norwegian Star cruises with embarkation dates through and including March 19, 2022
  • NCL Sun cruises with embarkation dates through and including April 19, 2022
  • NCL Spirit cruises with embarkation dates through and including April 23, 2022

Guests with a reservation on one of the affected cruises will automatically receive a refund in the original form of payment. For affected reservations paid via a previously issued Future Cruise Credit, guests will receive the full value of the FCC within 7 days. 

Additionally, guests will receive a 10% off Future Cruise Credit automatically on their account as of January 7, 2022. Guests can use this discount to make a booking any time through January 7, 2023 on any sailing through May 31, 2023. If guests used a previously issued 10% off FCC on this suspended reservation, they will get the FCC returned; however, a new one will not be issued.

  • We were supposed to sail on the Getaway on January 4th but were notified less than 24 hours before we would have been on the ship when we had already flown into Miami. It is unsatisfactory that they (NCL) are only offering a small discount on a future booking for such a last minute cancellation and inconvenience. Royal Caribbean offered a 100% credit for a future cruise in a addition to a full refund. Why is NCL not doing this? We needed to make last minute alternate plans due to being notified so late and surely spend more than if we had planned in advance. Did others experience similar problems?
