Royal Caribbean International has announced that its second Icon-class ship Star of the Seas will feature a brand-new entertainment show for the line: “Back to the Future: The Musical.”
The Olivier Award-winning musical that’s lighting up the stage on Broadway, the West End, and more will debut as a headlining show aboard the upcoming mega ship. In press materials on its website, the line said that “in store will be surprise Royal Caribbean twists to the musical hit, and along for the ride will be the show’s original creatives.”
Royal Caribbean’s entertainment team has already held two successful weeks of auditions for the show in London and New York City, and is set to begin rehearsals in 2025.
The 1985 movie “Back to the Future” is about a teen who’s thrown back to the 1950s when an experiment by his scientist friend goes awry. As he travels through time, he encounters his young parents and needs to make sure they fall in love or he’ll cease to exist.
Royal Caribbean released a video preview of the show today, which is the 9th annual “Back to the Future Day.” This date honors the fictional story featured in “Back to the Future II,” where the two main characters travel into the future from 1985 to October 21, 2015.
Like its sister ship Icon of the Seas, Star of the Seas will feature a plethora of entertainment venues including the high-dive AquaTheater in the ship’s glass-enclosed AquaDome, the Absolute Zero ice skating arena, and the classic cruise ship production venue the Royal Theater.
Star of the Seas is scheduled to debut in late August 2025. From Port Canaveral, the ship will operate seven-night eastern and western Caribbean voyages. All itineraries include a stop at Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay.
