One of the big reasons I love to cruise is the food. Yes, there is nothing wrong with admitting you are a cruise foodie.

While we have sailed many times on ships with a great selection of restaurants and onboard dining, nothing could quite prepare us for our recent Norwegian Escape cruise. This new mega ship boasts over two dozen dining options. You can choose from three main dining rooms, multiple casual dining spots, and specialty dining venues featuring food from all over the globe.

On our Norwegian Escape cruise, we ate and then ate some more trying to sample as many of the venues and food offerings as possible. A deliciously daunting task, not to mention a waistline enhancing feat, we were able to visit most venues available on the ship and sample some amazing cuisine. Narrowing down our favorite foods was tough, but in the end, we were able to come up with this list of our 7 favorite foods on Norwegian Escape.

Presented in no particular sequence, you better make sure to order these scrumptious treats when you sail on Norwegian Escape. Your taste buds will thank you.

Made to Order Omelets

You usually don’t think of the buffet as having some of the best food on a cruise ship, but don’t let the breakfast at the Ocean Café fool you. The made to order omelet stations offer one of the freshest breakfast options on Norwegian Escape. Choose from a selection of vegetables, meats, and cheese to add to your custom made omelet while you watch the chef prepare it right in front of you. Not over-cooked or greasy as can sometimes be the case, these omelets are light and flavorful. If one omelet is not enough, you are just a few steps away from other great offerings including hot and cold breakfast selections.

Volcano Nachos at Margaritaville at Sea

On occasion, you may enter a restaurant and notice that virtually every table appears to have the same plate of food. This was most definitely the case at the first Margaritaville at Sea. While known for Cheeseburgers in Paradise on land, the must eat menu item here on Norwegian Escape is the Volcano Nachos. Crispy tortilla chips piled high with queso cheese, pico de gallo, jalapenos, guacamole, and sour cream; it is quite literally a mountain of food. This plate is definitely worth sharing with a couple of friends as you enjoy a few signature margaritas and boat drinks in this open air specialty restaurant.

Late Night at O’Sheehan’s

There is bound to be at least one late night, where after enjoying a Broadway show or dancing the night away at the Glow Party, you are going to need a snack. Luckily, the 24 hour O’Sheehan’s offers some of the best “late night snacks” of any contemporary cruise ship. Yes, eating fried chickens wings doused in a tangy buffalo sauce or munching on grilled chicken fajitas is probably not the healthiest thing to do at 1am, but it just tastes so good. You can worry about the consequences later.

Chicken Yakiudon at Teppanyaki

Somehow food seems to taste a little bit better when it is prepared in front of you, wouldn’t you agree? While the Japanese Steakhouse Teppanyaki on Norwegian Escape also offers a great variety of steak and seafood options, the Chicken Yakiudon was a clear standout meal. Made with traditional cooking sauces and tossed with udon noodles, the chicken yakiudon was the perfect entrée which paired exquisitely with the soup, salad, and fried rice courses that preceded it. I had to grab a couple forkfuls from the wife’s plate even though I had my own plate full of hibachi steak.

Pasta at La Cucina

We have all had mixed experiences when it comes to Italian dining on a cruise ship. However, at La Cucina on Norwegian Escape, the chef has done an amazing job with some classic pasta dishes. My Linguine Cioppino came chocked full with clams, mussels, shrimp, and fish in a light and sweet tomato sauce that was worthy of some bread dunking. The wife’s Tortelloni came coated in a rich sage and butter sauce that was not overly heavy and quite tasty as well. Adding these dishes as our fifth course of the evening was well worth the extra calories.

Tapas at Food Republic

One of the hidden gems on Norwegian Escape is the Food Republic. A creation of the Pubbelly Boys from the Miami food scene, this fusion restaurant offers some of the best food on the ship. Of the 8 tapas we sampled at the restaurant (yes we are pigs), many of them were unbeatable.  The Teriyaki Chicken was lightly breaded and glazed with a sweet and sour ginger sauce, while the waiter’s recommendation, the Beef Anticuchos, were a great mashup of Latin flavors spread on medium seared beef skewers.  Both skewers were delectable, so luckily we did not have to choose just one.

Profiteroles at Le Bistro

Sometimes, the best part of the meal is the dessert! The traditional French cuisine at Le Bistro offers the hands down best dessert of our entire cruise. These Profiteroles consisted of a scoop of fresh vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two layers of the light, airy Choux pastry dough. Topped off with a hefty drizzle of chocolate sauce, each bite is the perfect combination of sweetness. Three is a crowd. So, while sharing this dessert with others is a possibility, you may want them all to yourself.
