Expedition Ships Coming to Viking Ocean Cruises?

The fast-growing Viking Ocean Cruises made more headlines this week. The company announced plans to add two more “special ships” to the fleet in 2021 and 2022 during a deal with Norwegian based shipyard VARD. Industry experts are suggesting that these new ships could be “expedition ships” bringing the cruise line into more direct competition with other luxury cruise lines. It is possible Viking will soon be offering Arctic Circle and Antarctic cruises using these specially outfitted vessels. Viking Cruises is already scheduled to grow its fleet to 16 ships by 2027 without these two vessels.

Celebrity Edge Cancels Two Preview Sailings

Celebrity Edge is one of the most anticipated new ships of the year. Cruisers were ecstatic to hear that the ship would be ready early and that the cruise line would add additional preview sailings. Unfortunately, it looks like Celebrity Cruises might have jumped the gun a bit. Cruise Critic reported this week that Celebrity Cruises was contacting guests to cancel the added November cruises, offering travelers the option to book a later 3-day sailing in December. The cruise line was also offering affected travelers airfare credit due to the change. Officials from the cruise line indicated that the changes were necessary to ensure the ship’s smooth delivery.

New Parties Coming to Norwegian Bliss

Not to be outdone, Norwegian Cruise Line made sure to garner the spotlight this week as well. On the cruise line’s blog, the company revealed that Norwegian Bliss would have a new show and launch three all-new themed parties. Mentioned in the release was the name of a second signature show, ¡Havana!, a musical production celebrating Cuban music and culture. During a seven-night cruise, travelers will have the chance to get down with new nighttime activities too. Cruisers can spice things up with the all-new Caliente “street party” and kick-up their boots at the country-themed Nashville Nights and Lights on the pool deck. Norwegian Bliss will also feature a silent disco party one evening of the cruise. These entertainment options will make their debut when the ship sets sail in early May.

MSC Cruises Adds New Beverage Program

Taking a cue from Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises is offering free beverages on Caribbean cruises. As part of the new Drinks On Us promotion, cruisers booking the MSC Divina, MSC Seaside, or MSC Meraviglia now through May 31st will receive a complimentary beverage package. This plan will include soft drinks, bottled and draft beers, house wines by the glass, and well drinks with house gin, vodka, whiskey, and rum. Cruisers can take advantage of the program even on inside rooms priced as low as $509 a person on Caribbean cruises through the Winter 2018-2019 season.
