The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its guidelines for fully vaccinated individuals again today. Now, the CDC updates mask guidelines for those who are fully vaccinated to include most outdoor settings.

Previously, the CDC updated its travel guidance for fully vaccinated individuals stating that it was now low risk to travel. Though in a somewhat contradictory sentiment, it later indicated that cruise travel was still considered Level 4: Very High Risk.

During a briefing earlier today, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky stated, “Today is another day we can take a step back to the normalcy of before.” “Over the past year, we have spent a lot of time telling Americans what they cannot do, what they should not do. Today, I’m going to tell you some of the things you can do if you are fully vaccinated.”

This new guidance issued today indicates that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask outdoors, except in certain crowded settings and venues.

Fully vaccinated people can now engage in the following activities without a mask:

  • walk, run, or bike outdoors with members of your household
  • attend a small, outdoor gathering with fully vaccinated friends and family
  • attend a small, outdoor gathering with fully vaccinated and unvaccinated people
  • dine at an outdoor restaurant with friends from multiple households

It is still recommended that fully vaccinated individuals wear masks while attending a crowded, outdoor event like a live performance, parade, or sporting event.

Fully vaccinated individuals should also continue to wear masks in most indoor situations. Walensky stated that the CDC will continue to recommend this until widespread vaccination is achieved.

However, Walensky did indicate that it is “safe for those who are fully vaccinated to return to the activities they love doing inside while wearing a mask.”
