It has been 10 years since we last sailed on Freedom of the Seas. A lot has changed in the cruising world since then. Plus, we are a bit more seasoned, having sailed on close to 30 voyages since that trip back in 2010. Still, we are thrilled to get back onboard this game-changing vessel from Royal Caribbean following its recent dry-dock. 5 Reasons We’re Excited to Sail on Freedom of the Seas
Updated Pool Deck
During its amplification, Freedom of the Seas received a number of updates to the outdoor decks. Among the biggest changes is the main pool area. Similar to other ships like the amplified Navigator of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas is now home to a Caribbean inspired pool deck. This newly themed area has a variety of seating options including casitas, daybeds, and hammocks, not to mention a much needed face-list with new accents and color scheme. The Princess and I have plans to enjoy this area which we loved on our three other sailings on amplified vessels.
More Complimentary Activities
At the aft of the ship, two new waterslides are joining the Flowrider as complimentary water attractions. The duo of Perfect Storm waterslides, the Cyclone and Typhoon, are fun sea day activities for cruisers of all ages. I will certainly be testing out these new additions to the ship. Not to mention, I may have to give the Flowrider one more try, as my first ever session was back on Freedom of the Seas. Is it time for a reunion?
Among the other updates is the newest laser tag game, Clash for the Crystal City. The Princess and I are prepared to challenge other cruisers in this family friendly competition in Studio B. Of course, we also plan to enjoy other Royal Caribbean staples like the 80’s party in the Royal Promenade, nightly entertainment in the main theater, and live music throughout the ship.
New Bars on the Ship
Among the updates to Freedom of the Seas is the addition of the Lime and Coconut Bar on the pool deck. This multi-story bar is home to a signature cocktail menu, live music throughout the day, and is always a good time. We really liked this bar on Navigator of the Seas and are excited to check out this latest rendition. There is also a new tequila bar coming to El Loco Fresh, the first of its kind on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. So, along with enjoying the Mexican lunch favorites while lounging poolside, cruisers with the Royal Caribbean drink package can sample signature drinks exclusively served at this new watering hole.
Freedom of the Seas also has some of our favorite bars found on cruise ships, like the Schooner Bar. This piano bar serves up some amazing cocktails including the lavender daiquiri and a properly made sidecar. We only wish that the Bamboo Room was added during this revitalization!
New Onboard Dining
Along with getting the aforementioned El Loco Fresh casual dining spot on the pool deck, Freedom of the Seas is now also home to a Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade. Encompassing a large section of deck 4, this venue offers some of the best chicken wings at sea, as well as other favorites including nachos and a mouthwatering burger. We will be sure to visit at least once during our cruise.
Another tasty addition is the re-imagined Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen. This new Italian restaurant offers a slightly different take on Italian classics, including custom made pizza baked in the new in-house pizza oven. The Princess and I already have our reservations secured for one night of our cruise. Don’t worry, we will be sharing all of the delicious details of the venue.
Southern Caribbean Itinerary
Another reason we didn’t hesitate to sail on Freedom of the Seas was the departure port and the itinerary. Departing from San Juan, the ship is heading to several islands we haven’t visited in a while. Of course, we will be flying down two days early to soak up the Puerto Rican sun and perhaps explore old San Juan a bit more.
The cruise then visits the ABCs and St. Thomas. As you probably know by now, we have several cruise excursions booked to make the most of our time in port. In Aruba, we are working with ABC Tours Aruba to explore the entire island on the full day Island Ultimate Safari Tour.
With other shore excursions including snorkeling in Bonaire, beach hopping in Curacao, and a day trip to St. John, this cruise is sure to be filled with several new adventures that we are eager to share with you.

It’s the only ship that you can go in that has stairs to get into the pool instead of the stupid ladder. you don’t realize that semi handicap people can walk, but don’t have the strength to use the ladder, but they can use regular steps with a hand rail..
