5 Mouthwatering Reasons to Dine at Ocean Blue on Norwegian Getaway

Signature Cocktail Menu

What better way to begin your dining experience in this elegant establishment than starting the evening off with a cocktail. Of course, there is a signature cocktail menu with 10 handcrafted drinks that are unique to Ocean Blue. Not ready to venture too far from her comfort zone, the Princess sampled the Mad Man Cosmopolitan (made with rum), while I went with the Hemingway Daiquiri. Or if you’d prefer, a glass of Norwegian Cruise Line’s own blend of North & South white or red wine is another great way to begin this culinary journey.

Your Daytime Lobster Fix

While Ocean Blue is open every night for dinner, you can also partake in a select menu on sea days. Located directly on the Waterfront, this “takeout” window includes some familiar fare for us New Englanders. Top on the list of things to try is the lobster roll ($9.95). With giant pieces of lobster lightly coated in a sweet mustard dressing on a toasted Brioche bun, it is a heavenly midday snack. Other choices include crispy calamari and crab tostada all served table side. This might just become your favorite daytime lunch spot. A la carte prices do apply.

Authentic Eats

It is often hard to replicate popular seafood dishes on a cruise ship, but Ocean Blue was able to wow us with their take on some classic appetizers. The restaurant’s New England clam chowder was a smooth, rich combination of large clams, potatoes, and crispy bacon. The fried squid appetizer was crispy and fresh, served with a perfectly seasoned aioli. Our starters got two thumbs up from these New Englanders. Even the Florida Stone Crab claws impressed our Miami-based foodie friends.

A True Surf and Turf

With lobster being scarce on some cruise ships nowadays, there were plenty of crustaceans on the menu at Ocean Blue. Our suggestion is the only “true” surf and turf on the ship. This cold water lobster tail was boiled to perfection and paired with a perfectly grilled filet. It is a combination that any sophisticated diner can appreciate it. Other selections include Sea Bass, Baked Sole, or Broiled Salmon, just to name a few. Don’t forget about the sides as well, with popular accompaniments including garlic mashed potato and four-cheese mac and cheese to complete your dinner.

Surprisingly Sweet Desserts

While you can certainly find plenty of tasty appetizers and entrees, be sure to save room for dessert. This unexpected treat is certainly worth the extra calories. For us, it was a toss-up between the Warm Flourless Chocalate Cake, which was as decadent and rich as the description implies, or the Apple Strudel with Cardamom. The sweet cinnamon apples wrapped in a light, flaky fried crusted were a mountain of pure yum. Do yourself a favor and order both!

If you are up for the challenge, you can throw caution to the wind and order the Seafood Extravaganza ($39.99). A heaping platter that includes a lobster tail, king crab legs, clams, mussels, and shrimp will make your eyes feel bigger than your stomach. Popular with frequent Norwegian Cruise Line cruisers, this meal is a legend, but it takes a pretty hefty appetite to finish it off. If you choose to accept the challenge, please let us know if you are able to clean the plate in one sitting!

  1. Does this restaurant serve anything else besides seafood? My husband loves seafood and wants to use one of our specialty meals here. I do not like seafood at all, but have never found a seafood restaurant that doesn’t serve something else too. Any advice?
