Total Eclipse of…a Cruise Ship

With this past week’s total eclipse of the sun, cruise lines celebrated this rare event in style. Perhaps the biggest party was onboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. Along with a viewing party, the ship hosted DNCE and Bonnie Tyler singing “Total Eclipse of the Heart” live during the ship’s two and a half minute experience of total eclipse. Carnival Cruise Line also got in on the action distributing 20,000 viewing glasses across its fleet. Several ships in the fleet also hosted eclipse themed parties to coincide with this historic event.

MSC Seaview Float Out

A major milestone was reached this week in the construction of MSC Cruise’s newest ship. Just a few days ago, MSC Seaview officially touched water for the first time. This float out occurred at the shipyard in Italy. The ship will arrive in June 2018 making it the second vessel in the Seaside class. This is just six months after the release of the first ship in the class, MSC Seaside. Both Seaside and Seaview will have identical venues. MSC Seaview will sail a summer season in the Mediterranean. The ship will then reposition to Brazil for the winter of 2018-2019 offering cruises to locations in the Southern Hemisphere.

Royal Caribbean’s Labadee, Haiti Maintenance

We are heading to Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay, Bahamas next weekend, which is currently undergoing some refurbishments and updates. While the other private island of Labadee, Haiti does not need a complete makeover, the cruise line has been doing some regular maintenance. While the work was started earlier this month, the line provided travel agents with an update and FAQ to address passenger concerns about the work. The island’s beaches will remain open during the refurbishment, which includes surfacing and grooming Adrenaline beach, as well as adding enhancements to the snorkeling area. All enhancements should be finished by October.

Uniworld Adding a Fifth Ship

A few days ago, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises announced it will be adding another ship. This fifth “super ship” will be joining the fleet in the spring of 2018. The line will be updating the River Beatrice to the new S.S. Beatrice. The overhaul will include the addition of a grand staircase and new dining venues. The onboard accommodations will also receive some improvements during the transformation. The S.S. Beatrice will return to service in April 2018. In addition, this relaunch will coincide with the debut of the new U by Uniworld, the river cruise line targeted toward millennial cruisers.

Don Bucolo, or “DB”, loves everything about cruising- the ocean, the food, and the atmosphere. While he may be obsessed with doing extensive amounts of research on ships and all elements of a cruise, Don enjoys sharing his new found knowledge with fellow cruisers. When he is not sailing the high seas, he does whatever his wife tells him to do-it only took 10 years to realize this.
