Overview of Restaurant

On Norwegian Getaway, Moderno is located on Deck 8, adjacent to Cagney’s Steakhouse. Positioned on the Starboard side of the Waterfront, this restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating. For this style of restaurant, we prefer to dine indoors, but for those who choose to dine outside, the experience will be exactly the same.

If you have never been to a Brazilian steakhouse before, then you are in for a treat. The concept is simple; for one set price, you can eat as much as you want. This includes not only the grilled selections but also items from the salad bar, side dishes, and selections from the dessert menu. On Norwegian Getaway, Moderno is a fixed price of $29.95. Or, you can use a meal credit from the specialty dining package and save yourself a few bucks. In our opinion, Moderno is a great experience regardless of the cost.

We highly recommend making restaurant reservations before your cruise, which are available 90 days before your sail date via your online NCL account. Yes, we are over planners, but the restaurant does get busy at peak times. Even if you prefer to be a bit more freestyle, make your dining plans as early as possible to assure your preferred meal times.

Devouring the Salad Bar

Once seated, your waiter will come over to introduce himself and explain the dining concept. At this point, we suggest starting with one of the signature caipirinhas. You are going to want to space things out a bit at this restaurant. While you might be tempted to head straight for the main course, do not overlook this salad bar.

With so many options, you might even need two plates. All the various greens and toppings can make for one impressive salad. But, that’s not all this salad bar offers; there are plenty of other tasty tapas to sample as well, including bread, fresh cuts of meat, cheeses, and even chilled shrimp. In fact, the salad bar could be a meal itself. I had to ration myself to two plates though, so I could save enough room for all the mouth-watering selections up next.

The 11 Most Important Reasons to Dine at Moderno

The main attraction at this restaurant is the various cuts of meat and poultry. To begin the experience, you are given a card with a green side and a red side. After you have done your damage at the salad bar, you can begin the meaty journey by simply turning the card over to the green side. Like magic, grill masters appear to offer you the various selections of beef, pork, and poultry, There are 11 different choices in all. Among my favorites were the filet mingon, the top sirloin, and the lamb chops. Even the Princess’ favorite, the chicken wrapped in bacon, was seared to perfection.

While you begin to devour these succulent cuts of meat, your waiter will also bring over some small side dishes. The sides are great compliments to the heavy carved entrees. Among these selections are white rice, sauteed mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes, and fried yucca.

The grill masters will continue circling the venue with non-stop offerings, so you can certainly flip your card to the red side at any point to take a break in between skewers. Once you have finally decided to call it quits because you can’t possibly eat anymore, make sure your card is red side up to alert your server that you are done. Hold on, you’re not done yet; there is still dessert! You can complete this eating marathon with options like a traditional flan or chocolate-coconut tres leches cake with a cup of coffee on the side.

Final Thoughts on Moderno

Moderno is one restaurant we continue to book when sailing on Norwegian Cruise Line. Our experience on Norwegian Getaway lived up to our expectations. Our waiter was very attentive throughout the entire meal checking in frequently to ensure we had enough drinks and were enjoying everything. This extensive dining experience is worth every savory minute, so be sure to reserve about two hours for dinner if you want to enjoy all three courses. While it is a family friendly restaurant, children are charged full price, so depending on the age and appetite of your little ones, this might not be a good choice for them. Another piece of advice- go early and get a drink at the Prime Meridian Bar located in between this restaurant and Cagney’s Steakhouse. There is a nice little seating area where you can unwind and prepare for the carnivorous feast that is about to unfold.

  1. We’ve dined at Moderno on several different NCL ships – most recently the Breakaway. Hands down our VERY favorite of NCL’s specialty restaurants. Disappointed that our next cruise on the Joy does not have a Moderno – but hoping that Q fills that ‘meat’ craving. Will post more after the next cruise!
